[Morgan runs over, lunges onto the bed, and--

Very carefully wraps her arms around Noire.]

...Welcome back... I'm sorry my plan didn't work--

But are you all right?

I'm not dead anymore... [ but she glances down at her chest, before she leans into Morgan. ] J-just... defective, apparently.

[Morgan's eyes follow Noire's automatically, and she grimaces.

"Defective". Probably to go along with Morgan's "Passed"?

But...she's not really pleased at all by that.]

So let me get this straight. They kidnapped you, threw you into a ridiculous challenge that killed you, and then they have the gall to say that you're "defective" when they don't even know you!

Ooh, people like them deserve a good lesson! Gods, I'll teach it to them myself when I see them!

No, I... [ a pause, because she knows Morgan isn't going to be happy to hear this, but. ] I... really messed up this time, so it... actually makes sense.

And to think that they had the gall to do all of that when they're too cowardly to even let us see who they are, for the most part! You fight on the front lines every single battle, I think it's clear who--

[. . . . . . whoa wait.]

I... there was one big part about all of this... [ she's starting to feel dizzy again, so pardon her if she stays leaned against Morgan. ] That... we all lost our abilities and got new ones that were hard to control.

S-so when... someone helped me to get a flag... and she fell because it was poisoned, I-- there was fire and it left me and it hit her--

[ the most quietly stricken, right here. ]

[Morgan doesn't mind--in fact, she lightly wraps her arm around Noire to keep her close.

.... and winces. That--that sounds like everything Father has always warned her about, when it comes to magic and control. With great power comes great responsibility, but to just throw it at someone and expect everything to be fine...]

Those dirty cowards...

Noire, that's--you couldn't have been expected to master a new skill just like that. I bet--I bet you were trying to save her, weren't you?

I don't know what I could have done... I wasn't strong enough to catch her and I couldn't heal her... s-so I don't even know why I reached out... but if I hadn't, she wouldn't have... h-have...

[ it's probably a good thing she's too feverish to hit BLOOD AND THUNDER mode right now, because damn is she stressed enough to. ]

[Poor, poor Noire. And admittedly...Morgan doesn't know how to deal with a situation like this. She had dealt with her own guilt at almost killing her friends by shoving it mostly out of her mind. How to deal with something like this, for Noire?]

Noire... We don't know what might've happened! I think it's pretty obvious to me that it's impossible to know for sure what's going to happen until it happens, and so we'd have to go back in time to know if that would have changed anything!

But you died too...and here you are. So I think...I think it's going to be okay. Because that is true.

I still can't... take death as lightly as this world wants us to...

I'm sure it was still agonizing for her... so I can understand why I failed, honestly.

[...and Morgan just sighs, head falling to rest lightly against Noire's.]

...I don't really know what to say. I mean, that's really horrifying, and I can understand why you're so sad.

But I don't think we should let them tell us when we fail or not! They're not our teachers or our leaders! They don't get a say in that, as far as I'm concerned!

They're not... they're our captors.

But they still branded us... and nothing I've done will make it go away.

[...and morgan just frowns, looking really determined.]

That's not true! There must be some way to hide it or get rid of it, and I'm going to find it! We have magics from all sorts of worlds here, so someone will know how!

M-Morgan... [ she's a little touched-- more than a little, because Morgan had seemed so cheery, if annoyed with their captors before. This? This is different, and it seems like it's for her sake.

She really is an amazing friend. ]

[It really is all for Noire's sake--she's not pleased by everything Noire has been through. But for now, Morgan just hums, holding Noire closer.]

You'll see! Everything will be juuuust fine.

I wish I had that kind of optimism... even just a little.

You can borrow some of mine, if you think it will help!

[that's...not even a joke, Morgan is absolutely serious right now.]

I don't think that's something you can just give away--

Of course it is!

[And she's...well, she is being ridiculous, but she's absolutely serious about it. She just takes her hands, grabbing Noire's tightly and squeezing.]

I'll share with you...the optimism for when things go really nice! That feeling of knowing that no matter how dark and gloomy things are sometimes, there are still things that will always go right, like how your arrows will always go straight where they're supposed to go, and like how Zohra will always get grumpy at me when I tease him!

I can definitely share that with you, but you have to do your part too! You have to notice when things always go right no matter what, because there are lots of them around, I'm sure of it!

I'm not sure if Zohra getting grumpy is something to be happy about... [ but Noire smiles meekly anyway, taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling as she squeezes Morgan's hands in return. ]

But I think... noticing when good things happen in a bad place shouldn't be too hard... r-right?

Sure it is, Noire! You just have to use your imagination a little. Besiiiides, the faces he makes are great!

[so there.

...but awwww.]

That's the spirit! I'm so proud of you!

I'll try... a-all right? I think that's all I can do right now.

That's good enough for me.

[Morgan just lets her head fall to rest against Noire's, nodding.]

I know if we try our best, we'll be fine. Always.
